Program Description

The Patsy T. Mink Center for Business and Leadership is proud to be an official Toastmasters Club, chartered in 2017.

Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. The organization has helped more than 4 million men and women become more confident in their speaking and leadership skills. Membership now exceeds 345,000, with 15,900 clubs in 142 countries.

Toastmasters was started in 1924 by Ralph C. Smedly, who was working for the YMCA in Bloomington, Illinois. He recognized a need for men to "learn how to speak, conduct meetings, plan programs and work on committees." According to the Toastmasters website toastmasters.org, Women weren't officially admitted until 1973.

Every Toastmasters club mission is: “We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.”

“I recently became a member of the Patsy T. Mink Center for Business and Leadership (MCBL) Toastmasters Club in an effort to advance my public speaking skills. Our MCBL Club was launched late last year. I find the program to be very “beginner friendly”, unintimidating, and supportive. More experienced toastmasters are always part of the meeting to mentor members and to help guide club meetings to meet Toastmasters standards. Besides a fun and supportive learning environment at the MCBL Club, you will also have an opportunity to meet great people outside of your profession.”
